What does this mean?

Hi Nancy,

Thank you for contacting Mearto with your appraisal inquiry.
Noritake was one of the most popular names for dinnerware in the mid 20th Century; not only was it handsome and serviceable but it was also comparatively affordable. Increasingly few people today, however, entertain in such a formal way and the market is saturated with services of varying sizes, colors, etc. Because there is less demand than supply, fair-market / auction prices for Noritake remain low, typically bringing $4-8 PER PIECE.
Based on the photos and information provided, and subject to examination, this is:

A vintage 54-piece Noritake parcel gilt porcelain part dinner service for 8
In the Valdina pattern (#3854), made in Japan, bearing the Morimura "M" backstamp in use from 1921-1940, comprising:
7 dinner plates
8 salad or dessert plates (8-1/2 inches diameter)
7 appetizer plates (6-1/4 inches)
11 cups and 12 saucers
1 cream pitcher
1 sugar bowl
1 large serving bowl
2 smaller ones
2 platters, one small and one larger
1 shallow oval serving bowl
1 small bowl
CONDITION: This service appears to be in good condition with only very minor losses. Value assumes no breaks, repairs or replacements.
PROVENANCE: Inherited
$250-450 for the set*

Thanks, Nancy, you're all set.
If you want to provide me with the diameters of the smaller plates, I can specify if those are lunch/salad or bread/dessert plates.
Have a great day,
Delia

Thank you for your appraisal. The 8 lunch/salad plates are each 8 1/2” in diameter; the 7 dessert/bread&butter plates are each 6 1/4”. Surprised that you asked about lunch plates. Who knew they were a thing! Not me, anyway.

I've updated this with the correct names for the plates. If you had plates that were 6 inches or smaller in diameter, those would be bread/butter plates.
Have a great weekend!
