What does this mean?

Hello Lisa,

This pair of Chinese ivory statues, believed to originate from the 1930s, depicts an emperor and an empress in exquisite detail and craftsmanship. Standing as regal symbols of authority and grace, these statues capture the essence of imperial majesty during the early 20th century.

Crafted from ivory, a material prized for its smooth texture and ability to capture intricate details, these statues showcase the skill and artistry of the sculptor. The emperor is depicted in traditional imperial robes, adorned with ornate patterns and symbols of power, while the empress exudes elegance and grace in her elaborate attire and headdress. Each delicate feature, from the facial expressions to the intricate folds of their garments, is meticulously carved to perfection, bringing the figures to life with a sense of realism and presence.

During the 1930s, ivory statues were highly sought after as symbols of status and refinement, particularly among the upper echelons of society. These statues likely adorned the homes of affluent collectors, serving as both decorative pieces and cherished heirlooms passed down through generations. Today, they stand as reminders of a bygone era, evoking a sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the craftsmanship and artistry of the past.

Is there an opinion as to what the colored stones are that are on each statue?

David u. Apr 07, 20:49 UTC

Hello Lisa, these are probably ornamental colourful stones but it is not possible to be certain.

Okay. Maybe I'll try to have a jeweler look at them locally.
I hope they're not plastic. The colors indicate perhaps coral, turquoise and lapis however I can't tell for sure.
