Piet Hein Auction Stats

The Danish idealist Piet Hein is renowned for his unique style and his ability to combine poetry, geometry and design in functional and harmonious creations. Hein contributed to different arts, mastering science, mathematics, design and poetry.

The Danish inventor started writing under the pseudonym "Kumbel", meaning "tombstone", during the Second World War. His studies in physics at the University of Copenhagen and Technical University of Denmark allowed him to develop an extraordinary mathematical intuition, which led to the creation of brilliant inventions such as the Superellipse. The harmonic design of the Superellipse was at first ideated in order to solve a town planning problem in Stockholm, resolving the double contrast between the circle and the square, and the ellipse and the rectangle. The new oval shape was later applied to constructions in the whole world and to a Fritz Hansen table series, in cooperation with the Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson
