Ettore Sottsass Auction Stats

Ettore Sottsass is an Italian designer, born in 1917 in Austria. He was living in Italy from 1929 and finished his education as an architect in Torino in 1939. However, fame found him as a designer.

His experimental and imaginative projects was a hit with the modernism trend. In 1956, his first collections of furniture, lamps and other objects of interior design were very provocative and different from the functionalist approach reigning over design at the time. The collections were colourful and it was important to give the design a sculpturesque aesthetic. In 1976 he co-founded the furniture design group “Studio Alchimia” and in 1981 the design collective Memphis. The design collective Memphis laid the foundation for the postmodernist design with colourful patterns and happy lines. After leaving the design collective memphis in 1985, he founded a design and architect company Sottsass Associati, where he continued his work with design, architecture, glass and ceramics. The Mandarine Chair, the Valentine typewriter, "Carlton" room divider and “Casablanca” bookcase are some of his famous designs.
